DIY Composting List:

  • Dedicate space on the ground for your compost site

  • Start with sticks and grass or hay

  • Add moist layers of household waste

  • Add dry layers of household waste.

  • Lots of carbon:  coffee filters, cornstalks, egg shells, peels, wood ash

  • Less nitrogen:  manure, lawn clippings, leaves,  food scraps

  • LAYER your items in moderation!   (wet, dry, wet, dry)

  • Allow air flow and liquids to permeate your entire compost pile

  • Cover your compost pile; (heat retention and moist is good, soaked is NOT good)

  • Drill holes in a covered container, allow air and rain to pass through

  • Turn your compost pile every few weeks with a pitch fork

  • Let the oxygen to do its thing!

DIY Composting No No’s:

  • Toilet paper – Tampons - Raw and/or cooked rice - Milk products (cream, milk, yogurt)  - Animal products (bones, blood, fish) - Magazine paper or heavily coated paper

Be patient!   DIY Composting will be well worth it for you, your garden, and your patio plants!
